An image can bring us close to a world we have never touched. But looking is only the beginning of a relationship. In “Virtual Friendship”, a warm, luminous human figure shares the composition with green parrots. Wings spread across angular planes; curves pass between body, birds and surrounding objects. Against the dark ground, orange, turquoise and green make the encounter feel vivid and welcoming. This is the language of my Optimistic Cubism: recognisable forms, strong contrasts and the pleasure of discovering how separate shapes belong together. The human figure does not stand outside nature, looking in. Figure and birds inhabit the same painted space. The title opens a question rather than supplying an answer. What makes a friendship real — proximity, attention, or what we are prepared to do for another life? A painting can offer an imagined meeting. A screen can carry that meeting across the world. Neither makes the feeling worthless. Yet affection for an image and responsibility for a living creature are not the same thing. I want the joy to remain. I also want it to lead somewhere beyond the image. That is the connection to my work on the ARK Project: moving from an appreciation of nature towards the practical protection and restoration of natural territories in the Southern Cone. This is the wider context in which I present the painting today. The original “Virtual Friendship” has been sold. Its image remains here as part of my published artistic record, but the physical painting is no longer available through the studio. For a future patron, the invitation continues through the works that remain available: to live with the painting itself, and to consider supporting the work beyond it. A connection can begin with an image. What we do next gives it substance.
